For larger or unknown leak sources, locate your main shutoff valve — typically in the basement, crawl space, or on an exterior wall near the water meter — and close it completely.

If the emergency involves a water heater, also shut off the gas supply at the valve on the gas line going to the unit. For a sewer backup, avoid using any drains or toilets in the home to prevent worsening the backup. Turn off appliances that use water such as dishwashers and washing machines.
